Unlimited freedom of design
with the Pfleiderer DST System

This unique system opens up an unprecedented number of variations in design. There is also an extensive range of decors available that can be combined with design and application-based surface textures on a variety of core materials. This way the engineered wood-based materials are both ideally adapted to each requirement and perfectly in tune with the overall visual impression.

The Capri by Fraser hotel residence in Frankfurt am Main – conceived and designed by the JOI-Design interior design office – are a good example of how the DST system is applied. In the interview, CEO Peter Joehnk explains how the DST system can combine form and function.

How does the wide variety of the DST system support you in your projects as an interior designer?
It is a great advantage for us that we can get every colour in every surface texture in every product quality from the same system. Especially in the hotel sector, where often a whole building complex with many different areas such as the reception lobby, restaurant, corridors, relaxation areas and hotel rooms need to work in harmony with each other. To a degree, the furniture, walls, ceilings and other design elements need to visually echo the same design, even if they are subject to different requirements.

To what extent are the surfaces in a hotel subject to different forms of wear and tear?
The room doors, for example, are among the elements with the most wear and tear. They need to resist impact and stay firm against kicks, suitcases or vacuum cleaners. Desks must also be extremely scratch resistant, because guests often like to put their suitcases there. There is also a difference between the vertical fronts of cupboards and their core. As, while their doors are in constant movement, the demands on the interiors are relatively limited. It is all about preserving the overall visual appearance in the long term, so it is important to harmonise all the elements with each other in spite of the different demands they have to fulfil.

“We can give virtually free rein to our design creativity with the DST system. The application options for the various surfaces and qualities with the same decor are unique and we are happy to use them.”

How exactly has the DST system been able to help you here?
Among other things this system has enabled us to change the materials for our wardrobes. As, while the melamine faced DecoBoard was used for the carcass, the core material for the fronts was laminated with Duropal HPL, which has a greater layer thickness and more solid edges. Yet for both materials the Shadow decor with a matt lacquer surface texture was deployed, and this was also used for the bedside tables. We could work in the same way with the Icy White decor for the kitchen cupboards – which we also used for the desks – with a high-gloss surface texture that is particularly robust and scratch resistant. All this was combined with the Duropal HPL SolidColor laminate that is coated on both sides to create an accomplished appearance with a consistent core of the same colour. We also use the impact-resistant HPL for doors – and we particularly like it in XTreme Matt. That’s because its anti-fingerprint effect ensures a sustainably fine appearance and reduces the cleaning time, particularly in the bathroom area. We exploited the variety of combinations in the DST system well in this project and we are delighted with the result.

What is the idea behind the design concept at Capri by Frasers?
We always look for a theme that we can focus on in our projects. In this case it is the fashion of the Frankfurt bank employees. We were inspired by the men in grey suits and contrasting white shirts and the women in their traditionally elegant shepherd’s check suits. This style was captured in an abstract fashion. Colourful features are set in the warm yellow that is also a signature of this Singapore hotel brand. This way we have created a fresh, modern atmosphere, which is both comfortable and contemporary at the same time.

Why did you decide in favour of products from Pfleiderer?
The company meets high design and quality standards. On top of this, our various suppliers of doors and interior fittings are all happy to draw on this range of products. And we can give virtually free rein to our design creativity with the DST system. The application options for the various surfaces and qualities with the same decor are unique and we are happy to use them.
